This paper explores John Dewey's understanding of humanity and community, and deals with the possibility of Dewey's ideas to complement Reinhold Niebubr's weaknesses that many liberation theologians and feminist theologians point out. Dewey argues that human nature is changeable and neutral. Humans exist as individuals-in-associations. As social beings, they interact with surroundings and achieve self-growth in the continuous process of change. Dewey also conceptualizes community by focusing on humans' acts and their consequences. In particular, he regards some acts as public when their consequences are not confined to those involved, but influence those who are not directly concerned. A public then emerges. This public is composed of those who are both directly and indirectly influenced by the consequences of acts. Dewey's understanding of humanity and community is different from Niebuhr's in that, while Niebuhr regards the nature of individuals and communities as egocentric and selfish, Dewey does not assume a prior, fixed premises concerning human nature. Niebuhr's rigid understanding of human nature seems not to reflect upon the position of the oppressed such as poor women. I believe that Dewey's approach to humanity and community enables humans to consider diverse aspects of humanity and community.
