Major changes in the intellectual realm during the latter period of Silla, an age of transition, included the rise of Seonjong at the expense of Hwaumjong and the spread of Pungsu-Geographic Theory and Maitreya Faith.
This study is to investigate the impact of Sun-Do, Shin-Do, and Pung-Ryu-Do, all of which are native ideologies of Korea, on the complicated intellectual currents during the latter period of Silla. Special attention is given to such issues as the origins of these ideologies and their essential nature. By doing so, one can contribute to the grasp of the intellectual history of the period in question.
In particular, Pung-Ryu-Do appealed to the people who, facing a great intellectual chaos due to the rise and spread of such diverse ideologies as Seonjong, Pungsu-Geographic Theory, Maitreya Faith, and Taoism, were looking forward a new intellectual paradigm. Choi Chi-Won, one of the leading intellectuals of the period, succeeded to make Pung-Ryu-Do an ideology which, he emphasized, would help the mass to shape a national identity and to overcome the contemporary troubles. Without it, the political integration achieved afterwards by the Goryeo dynasty, a landmark in Korean history, would not have been possible.
