This study looked into spacial awareness appearing in Lee, Yeon-ju’s poetries. This will be the profound study that clarifies Lee, Yeon-ju’s awareness and cogitation in detail.
First, the poetic space that this poet awares has the meaning of desperate space in corrupt city-civilization. Development of capitalism brings rapid advance of city- civilization. However, this also causes negative problems such as the loss of humanity, the alienation of human beings, and sexual depravity. Lee, Yeon-ju recognize these realistic spaces to desperate spaces which doesn’t have utopian possibility at all, and her thoughts are found out through her works.
Second, the desperate attitude in Lee, Yeon-ju’s poetries relates to the violence existing in the realities of Life. This poet reveals that in the space of violence, surveillance and restriction interrupting intemal understanding of a person and between people, and the property of suppression place. TIle poet describes city-civilized spaces in her works which no communication exists in. The poet intends to show panopticonic plot is prevailing; this panopticonic plot has features of surveillance, restriction and suppression targeting the maximum effects of surveillance by using the minimum expenses.
Third, Lee, Yeon-ju speaks about the space of paternalismic ideology; in paternalism, male-dominated system and public orders are reproduced and, females are forced to accept self-sacrifice and suppression naturally. Life in paternalismic orders compels females to accept androcentric dominating system and social orders as sacrifice and suppression and at the same time, the poet experience frustration under this social situation and tries to neglect and deconstruct it.
The awareness on negative space in real life of the poet expresses this gloomy and dark portrait of city-civilization using direct and unrefined poetic dictions. This characteristic of Lee, Yeon-ju’s works approaches to readers as shocking and unpredicted one in the space of present city-civilization.
