The aim of this study is to understand the psychological experience of infertile women in their thirties through art therapy activities, and study the nature of the experience in order to develop art therapy programs and theories that may help the subjects effectively deal with their own infertility in order to increase their own happiness and health.
First, most studies aimed at overcoming infertility ignore the psychological experiences of infertile women, but rather concentrate on cutting-edge science and medical treatments. Therefore, this study attempts to increase the understanding for the psychological care of infertile women, by providing a chance for their creative expression through free art therapy activities.
Second, for the psychological understanding of infertile Korean women, one does not need an objective understanding based on foreign documents, but rather a study based on the subjective understanding of the unique Korean society and culture. Also, there is a need for studies to be carried out from a sensitive, gynocentric point of view, free from male-oriented prejudice, in order to develop the appropriate treatment and care.
Through this study, the subjects gave voice to their emotions, repressed within the roles demanded by the patriarchal Korean society, and it served as an opportunity for them to look back on themselves as an individual from a new perspective. In order to understand the meaning and nature of the experience of art therapy on infertile women in their thirties, this study applied Van Manen’s interpretive phenomenological methodology, composed of a total of 10 stages, including concentration on the nature of experience, existential investigation, interpretive phenomenological reflection, phenomenological writing, etc. The data was collected through in-depth interviews and art therapy activities, and the interview data were collected to a degree of saturation. In addition, diaries, memos, literature, and art work were collected as well for referral during analysis.
