This thesis explores the politics of women-body-reproductive technology through listening to infertile women who have experienced IVF & ET. At first, I examine who the subjects control discipline power on infertile women's bodies are, how the power relations signify women's bodies, and the ways of how reproductive technologies including the IVF & ET work on women's bodies. Given that feminist politics is a women's struggle for being subjects, I would like to find a spot where women can be subjects in investigating how infertile women resist to and negotiate with intervention and interference of controlling discipline power embedded in the reproductive technological practice.
Results of the research are the followings. First, the way of signifying on married women is given as a realization of motherhood. The discourse on infertility has not been understood as a difference but as an abnormal deviation and represented as lack of something. As a result, there have been always intervention and interference of power relations towards infertile women and their resistance to and negotiation with it as well. Facing a tacit demand for practicing motherhood, infertile women try to realize their identities through working in jobs or other social activities, avoiding contact with people who demand motherhood to them.
Secondly, medical professionals and their reproductive technology have intervened in the arena of infertility with its special and scientific authority. It entails that infertile women leave their bodies completely to the medical professionals and the technology when they do IVF & ET; their bodies become the other and are impoverished in a case and they are alienated in the process. However, infertile women watch over their bodies in order to overcome the otherness of their bodies. They sometimes produce knowledge based on their own language in a informal way to respond to the power of knowledge of medical professionals and do make efforts for interactive relationships each other to escape the fear from the technology and to overcome the alienation.
Thirdly, while the reproductive technology including IVF & ET defines infertility as a pathological phenomenon that provides the discourse of identifying pregnancy with womanhood, on the other hand it realizes women's desire for being mother. In other words, it can be threaten to infertile women's identity and at the same time can be a new opportunity to liberate women. Hence, it cannot be seen in a dichotomy of oppression/liberation, rather can be characterized its social construction within the context.
The politics of body and the technology are becoming an important agenda in the 21 centuries. How women can be subjects in the two contested areas of women's body and technology in that various groups compete to practice their own power? It could be possible in finding a spot in that women can resist to and negotiate with the power relations through their subjective views with caution and investigation.
