The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of psychological experience of art therapy on first-time mothers suffering from postpartum blues, then developing various and appropriate art therapy programs for them. This study will provide comprehensive data on women experiencing postpartum blues, in order to aid in the developments of well-rounded art therapy programs.
To understand the meaning and nature of the experience that first-time mothers suffering from postpartum blues get to have through art therapy, this study utilized the Van Manen interpretative phenomenological methodology consisting of a total of ten stages, including concentration on the nature of experience, existential investigation, interpretive phenomenological reflection, phenomenological writing, etc. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and art therapy activities, and data was collected to a degree of saturation. Diaries, memos, literature, and artworks were also collected for referral during analysis.
The subjects of this study were ten first-time mothers who had given birth within the past year and had experienced postpartum blues, who scored 13 or above by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).
The final results from reconstructing the meaning of art therapy experience on first-time mothers suffering from postpartum blues through the large and small topics presented in this study are as follows: First, postpartum blues has an adverse influence on a first-time mother who is experiencing the physical, psychological, and environmental changes from giving birth. Second, postpartum blues makes the subject experience a new identity as a mother, as well as giving confusion and conflict within her life. Third, art therapy allows the first-time mother with postpartum blues to look back on herself in the present, and provides a time in which she may connect with her inner self Fourth, art therapy provides the first-time mother with postpartum blues with an opportunity for rediscovering her positive sides.
