POst_Email is a project that seeks to combine the natural affordances of paper as a medium of communication and our intuitive understanding of it, with all the benefits of mobility, speed and global access that email communication technology empowers us with.
In this paper, I describe a system used to transmit text and images on paper as email content, using a proposed set of 'new generation post-boxes' implemented with commercially available bar code scanners, pocket computers, wireless networks, and web services. I discuss the design goals of this project, and its possible implementation scenario.
I discuss how such a project can, in its own little way, contribute to the notion of true mobility. The freedom to use services of the connected world, both wired and wireless - when and where one may choose to, without being tied down to a burdensome device or an impoverished display to do so.
