This study is summarized as follows.
Firstly, there were many influential forces in almost all parts of the Chungcheong region, one of the major arenas for struggle between Goryeo and Baekje. The inland areas of the Chungcheong region were one such arena where Wang Geon(王建) under the command of Gung Ye(弓裔) had an active presence. The inland part of the Chungcheong region was, on the one hand, where GungYe started his political career in his quest for ultimate power, and, on the other hand, under the sphere of influence of Gi Hwon(箕萱) and Yang Gil(梁吉). Therefore, Wang Geon focused on the regions familiar to Gung Ye and thereby succeeded in capturing them.
Secondly, it was the inland part of the Chungcheong region that Wang Geon began to show interest in, for the first time, after ousting Gung Ye and seizing the throne. This region, however, gave Wang Geon much trouble because several insurrections were raised there. Many of the rebellions took place in the neighborhood of Cheongju, but before long Wang Geon straightened out the confusion. According to historical records, following his enthronement, many of Wang Geon’s moves toward the Chungcheong region are found both in the sphere of influence of Gung Ye and around Asan-Man(Bay of Asan).
Lastly, securing a waterway shortcut between Gaegyeong(開京) and Asan-Man got Wang Geon so much interested in Asan-Man. This was because Wang Geon wanted to get an advantage over Gyeon Hwon(甄萱) in vying for ultimate power. The possibility of ensuring such a fairway came from those who had experiences with Hanseon(韓船), a Korean traditional sailing boat. As a result, Wang Geon was able to solve the question of how to enhance his army’s mobility for the Battle of Illicheon(一利川戰鬪), the last battle of the war against Hubaekje(Later Baekje), thereby accomplishing the unification of the Korean peninsula. If Goryeo’s troops had moved from Gaegyeong to Cheonanbu(天安府), where preparations for the Battle of Illicheon had been made, both by land and by sea, they would have reached Cheonanbu far faster.
