Using historical analysis, and drawing from the novels and other literature on Flora Nwapa and her works, this paper examines the intellectual contributions of Flora Nwapa to the development of studies on African women as well as women's studies in general. Between 1966 and 1986, Nwapa, the first African woman to publish a novel in English, had five novels and other works to her credit. Nwapa's novels are not only gender-oriented in their specificity, but also child-directed and community-centered. The dominant themes in her novels include women's role and status in society, complementarity of gender roles, marriage, motherhood and childlessness, polygyny, levirate, widowhood, survival strategies of women, and the phenomenon of the female principle, Uhamiri, the Woman of the Lake in Igboiand, Nigeria. Effort is also made to analyze the impact of Western education, colonialism, the Nigerian Civil War and other problems of contemporary Nigeria on women.
