This article explores externally- and internally-motivated postcolonial policies and programs that have largely helped to shape the history of African women since independence. The vestiges of colonialism and neocolonialism as well as development programs pursued by independent African countries have continued to affect the role of women in the continent. In addition to the imposition of inappropriate Western notions of family and gender roles on Africans, their governments and external agents in most developed countries have continued to ignore the precolonial sociopolitical structures that had served women. As a result, African women have become one of the most vulnerable social groups under the severe political, economic, social, health and environmental problems facing the continent. In spite of the vulnerability, African women have continued to be very active in rural economies and vocal in regional affairs. They have been quite resilient and adaptive in their endeavors in spite of several inhibitive factors. In this article, effort is made to examine the roles of African women in postcolonial politics and economy, as well as how health issues and structural adjustment programs have affected them. Women's survival strategies to cope with the postcolonial problems facing African states, the challenges and gains made are also discussed.
