〈Christmas in August〉 directed by Heo Jin-ho in 1998 is a story about people we can see around everyday and its place is also so familiar to us that we hardly feel any peculiarity. Nevertheless the movie conjures up illusions of warmth and beauty that have never been experienced in any melodrama. In these days when sensational films are pouring out, stimulating people's shallow emotion, the distinction specific to 〈Christmas in August〉 made the movie still totally strange to us and the strangeness is the biggest merit of the film that make it special.
The strangeness displayed by the work is based on the delicate harmony and the paradoxical confrontation between the season of August and Christmas. The encounter and parting of Jeongwon who had to prepare the end of his life and Darim who stood on the starting line of a new life is an example that describe the nature of the movie. In addition, another example of paradoxical relation is the contradicting situation of the emotions and behaviors of surrounding characters who, facing the death of the lovely son, brother and friend, suppress their heart-breaking pains and look over him all the way.
In this viewpoint, this study examined how main spaces in (Christmas in August) contribute to the theme and story of the work and the characters' emotional conditions.
