Society Progresses with conflicts between its tendency towards stabilizing its organizational system, and its tendency to tolerate and accept revolutionary elements rooted in itself. Contemporary Korean Society, while showing symptoms of post-industrial society, is currently undergoing this kind of systematical evolution. Such systematical convulsion inevitably calls for the need of reestablishing the identities of its members and the relationship among them. Films reflect all these symptoms. This thesis observes the idetities of male and female characters as well as the transition of their relationship in the current melodramas, 〈Happyend〉 and 〈A Good Lawer's Wife〉, and argues that these emotional changes and condlicts are the direct representation of the swriling aspect of the contemporary society.
Korean Melodramas have been represeting the relationship of men and women, which was concidered to be under the dobule restrains of Confucian and capitalistic patriarcal system. Therefore, women, as 'the other' in the nation, society, and family, were represented accoring to the need of men. However, the situation changed especially after the economic crises in late 1990s. Korean society is now asking men to look back themselves. Korean men, who once believed themselves to be 'the subject' within the nation and society, have to redefine their identity. In great confusion, they sometimes display anger against women who would resist traditional subordination. On the whole, however, they represent inevitable cracks in patriarch ideology. Futhermore, the immoral melodramas which represent the sexual relationship outside the marrige, have the potentiality of showing alternative ways in the issues of sexuality and gender.
This thesis concludes that 〈Happyend〉 and 〈A Good Lawer's Wife〉 should be discussed under positive point of view for their quest for new inentities and relationship between men and women while reflecting the social transition. This arguement would enable to futher the communication between men and women, by combining the recognition of reflective modernazation with the politics of representation.
