Today's youth is called @ generation. This terminology, coming from @ of e-mail address, indicates the generation of high-tech information industry age to whom the use of new media has become a part of daily life, More specifically, this generation is composed of youth from 13 to 25 years of age who were bom in from mid-70s to late 80s. It is estimated that this generation has more than 10 trillion won in purchasing power. Thus, consumption industry targeting this @generation has rapidly grown.
This generation has a fusion life style that makes the best of high-tech media like mobile phone, computer, PC communication and internet as well as current media like book, newspaper, magazine and TV. They are so familiar with virtual reality and virtual space through computer game that they are facing rapid change by so-called new media technology. It is not long ago that available media is only TV, movie and radio in our daily life. But, now, we have entered new media era that provides different level of media services from the past as diverse new media appear.
Youth, as the most active consumer of media, are called media generation. This can be explained by that youth are prone to be affected by outside stimulus since they are not matured enough to make proper value decision. Therefore, we should provide proper media education for them and help old generation have a better understanding of new media.
Most of youth media education activity can be divided into media program production and appreciation of current productions. This kind of activity helps youth make active communication by actively responding to media messages rather than passively taking mass media messages. In particular, this activity is very useful considering current situation that does not allow any filtering of information mass media is pouring.
However, this activities also has a negative aspects considering present conditions of media education for youth who are exposed to various harmful media without any protection.
Followings are some examples of negative aspects; Most of programs are produced after short-term instruction. Only very small number of students participate in this activity to win at the Youth media contest. The problem is that we provide a superficial short-term 'media production class' for youth who has no ability to understand media properly due to the lack of 'critical view class'.
The essence of 'critical view class' lies in the correct understanding and use of media that has bilateral characteristic. That is, they should have wisdom to emphasize the positive aspect of media and to actively use it while to minimize the negative aspect.
However, some media education institutions lead youth to imitate the routine movie style of old generation by placing more emphasis on 'media production instruction' rather than 'critical view class' in order to achieve bigger effect in a short period of time.
New media era provides information and culture as diverse as media. Youth, a new media generation, can be a real player of this era only when they have ability to take control of diverse media, information and culture for their own use. To this end, we should provide diverse media education and production opportunity for them in order to help them become an active taker and utilizer of new media.
This study attempts to investigate the present conditions of media production activity which attracts the most attention of youth among youth activities in media era and to suggest alternative plan for some problems.
