Philip Kan Gotanda is a Sansei Japanese American dramatist who persistently picks up his literary themes from his own ethnic experiences in America. He often says he has been developing two kinds of literary themes through his dramatic works: the one is the Camp trauma and the other is the racism. Although Gotanda himself didn't experience the Camp, he has inherited his parents' mental scar. It has certainly affected his literary attitude and critical views in writing.
Gotanda tries to represent Japanese Americans' reality and cultural identities in his well-made-play-style The Wash. The play deals with two thematic focuses: the internal matters of the Japanese American community and the external relationships with the main-stream white culture. These two are very closely interwoven because the internal matters are continuously affected by the external. The Wash successfully shows how a family's domestic collapse is directly related with its socio-cultural environments.
Gotanda dramatizes conflicts between the Western and Asian cultural values through the tangled relationships of characters in The Wash. The separation and the divorce between Masi and Nobu become a forum to discuss all possible questions today's Japanese American community is facing. However, his critical attitude in dealing with Japanese American reality in the work is neither offensive nor propagandic, In the way to draw the conclusion in The Wash, Gotanda tends not to stick to the Japanese values. As Nobu accepts Masi's decision and Timothy as his grandson in the end, Gotanda seems to offer a harmonious way to go with the Western culture as long as they cannot perfectly seclude themselves from it.
