Langston Hughes's poetry is a musical language into which he transforms the history of African-Americans and his wish to overcome their suffering. This study aims to examine the relationship between black music and Hughes's poetry, and also to investigate how the relationship reflects the socio-political situation that he and his contemporaries confronted.
This study attempts to deal with Montage cf a Dream Deferred and other middle-period poems through which he tried to save black Americans from despair, in view of bebop and his radical political position. The rhythm of bebop is believed to be the African- Americans' musical response to their deferred and broken dreams during the 1930s and 1940s. It can be believed that the spirit and the major characteristics of bebop dwell in the poems written during the middle period of his literary career.
The diverse ideas shown in Montage if a Dream Deferred converge on one point' Hughes seeks to express the pain and suffering of African-Americans by introducing elements of bebob rhythm into this collection of poems. The result is an endeavor that can liberate African-Americans socially and spiritually, and, more broadly, produce magnificent poetic power appealing to the universal emotions of the human race.
