As one of the most accomplished poets in Korean history, Li Qixian was famous for his poetic theories, which was collected in his Li Weng Bai Shuo. This comparative study of the poetic theories of Li and that in Song-Yuan dynasties in China is impeded by the facts that Li had spent a long time in China in Yuan dynasty, and was deeply influenced by some most famous Chinese poets at that time.
Most of Lis poetic ideas were rooted in the poetic theories of Ou yangxiu\Mei Yaochen, and Hung Tingjian. It was held by Mei and Ou that the purpose of a poem was not simply to create the scence before the eyes but also to present inexhaustible implications beyond the words . This was of the primary importance in the poetic theories in Sung , and was fully accepted by Li Qixian. Lis opinion about the rhetoric was influenced by Huang Tingjians deep investigation into the poetic word. In Ou yangxius opinion, the content of a poem should not be inconsistent with the facts. This can also be seen in Li Qixians poetic thoughts. Like Mei Yaochen and Ou Yangxiu, Lis poetic works tinted realistic flavor to describe the outside world.
There was still something different. Novelties and imaginative reach had never been depreciated in Lis poetic thoughts. For example, the imaginative works of Du Mu, the famous poets in Late-Tang, were highly praised by Li, whereas these kind of poems were depreciated in Sung poetic thoughts. Borrowing rhetoric of traditional poetics and its ascetics, Huangs pursuit for creativeness was limited. This limitation was broken through in Lis poetic practice and thoughts. When Li was in the capital of Yuan dynasty, he was greatly influenced by some most famous poets at that time, such as Yao Sui\Yuan Mingshan\Zhang Yanghao\Zhao Mengfu. Unlike their sung forerunners, they were inclined to the fabulous style of Han Yu. This legitimated the creative ideas in poetry.
The poetic thoughts of Li was also characteristic of Neo-Confucianisms influence. For how to enjoy the beautifulness of the even and bland poetic style, Li suggested to make ones heart in composure, devoid of any train of thought. This was first interpreted by Zhuxi, the most famous Neo-Confucianist in Southen Sung. Lis poetic works showed little interest toward the love affairs and gorgeous rhetoric. Some pieces expressed criticism for the history, which were characteristic of Neo-Confucianism ideas.
Lis ascetic thoughts were not been hindered by his acceptance of the Neo-Confucism. As a literate-bureaucrat Shih, which was represented by Ou Yangxiu\Su Shi\Huang Tingjian in Northen Sung , he could made balance between his literary and bureaucratic achievements and his acceptance of the Neo-Confucianism.
