Oral fables collected in Pohang contains the contents of all general oral fables distributed throughout Korea. For the reason that Pohang has distinct features of fishing villages, farm villages, and mountain villages, it is able to portray the characteristics of each industry.
In geographical folk tale, one can find the fear of the nature and how the people living in the region confront the ambiguous lives that they have. Folk tales about the configuration of the ocean has the characteristics of pacification of fear, and the frustration or breakdown of people in the region is shown in folk tales that causes taboo.
Hero tale is similar to other regions, but it often portrays the sorrow and breakdown filled with grief. One can find that the people in the oral fables wait for a hero who will be able to change the reality of their lives, but out of their fear that the existing power will oppress them they are to kill the hero - the contradictions and frustrations of the mass of people is shown in the oral fables.
Ethic tales show how the ready erected order is in danger with emphasis. In order to reestablish the order which is faced in danger, the process of teaching is stressed and exaggerated in this regional oral fable. Unrealistic filial deeds and miracle accomplishments appear in oral fables. Among them, one can find the rare opposition behavior taken against the ready erected order affirmatively portrayed in oral fables, which is hard to find in other regions.
Compared to other regions, wisdom tales are not delicate. The discovery of events sometimes do not dispose to the relation of cause and effect, instead, it comes to an irrelevant end. However, it holds the content such as pacification of unkind treatment received in other region and achievement of ideal world by getting out of the region.
