In this paper apology consciousness was examined based on the perspective of an ‘assailants view’, focusing on culture and gender difference in both Japanese and Malay cultures.
Japanese and Malaysian senior high school students completed questionnaires to assess their degree to which someone feels they should apologize {Apology Consciousness Item 1}, and the degree of inexcusability and regretability｛ Apology Consciousness Item 2 }
The result shows that
1. Exceeding the culture, the woman showed a high ranking than the male.
2. In overall Japanese respondents, describe higher self-consciousness than Malay respondent’s in both items.
3. Among the groups (Japanese male, Japanese female, Malay male, Malay female), Japanese female describe the highest degree of self-consciousness in both items.
