This study is focused on archetype consciousness and recognition about the word “Sea(海)” in Ancient Chinese. But the contents concerned with the sea is scattered in ancient Chinese records, I focused on the scriptures ≪Shang Shu(尙書)≫ that is representative documents of pre-Qin, especially the Xia(夏), Shang(商) and Zhou(周) periods. So I divided it into three parts that are Characteristic meaning, Geographic meaning and Space meaning.
I found two symbolic meanings throughout the Chinese Character “Sea”. First, Ancient Chinese regarded “Sea” as a substance that was understood as an extension of “Water”, it accepts all of streams and includes all creatures. Second, they regarded the “Sea” as a murky world that was alienated from a human society.
From a Geographic viewpoint, the “Sea” was the matter that could divide the area. Ancient Chinese people in pre-Qin society wholly focused on the concept of “Water”, and regarded the “Sea” as the continental edge, it's meaning was not important to them. Although they regarded the “Sea” as a region's boundary, this definition was based on a general meaning of region's section, was not concrete nor accurate meaning. They used it as a meaning of region that was outside of a capital city, and thought it as backward and uncivilized. In addition, they regarded the “Sea” as a substance that can accept all streams and include all creatures.
In space perception, they created “The Four Seas(四海)”. So their perceptive sphere of sea was became wider from practical direction and geographic boundary to the concept of space extensity. Through the relationship of center and remote region, they developed a concept of an enlarged idea that involved the area of subordinated groups. Through the theory of “Ji-Fu(畿服)”, they created distinction between majority (the inside) and minority(the outside). And at the same time, they also saw “The Four Seas” as a space extensity, so it could absorb these two matters. In other words, they created the distinction of ‘civilian(華)’ and ‘barbarian(夷)’, and they bound up these two types simultaneously in a circumference of a world system. I think this idea is the foundation of China oriented theory.
