This thesis mainly worked on three aspects. First, the characters of novels are created negatively from the origin as the subaltern of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Second, it represents the sinister presentiment about the future and the aspect of determinism reflecting the past. Third, it shows the hidden neocolonialism.
In this novel, the subaltern seems to be determined as the beings lacking morally and spiritually. Characters fall down harshly as if they were born for the misery. So it seems like that the responsibility of the ruin is on to the personal deficiency of the characters. This process of the destruction is being confirmed in the structure of the sinister presentiment about the future and the aspect of determinism reflecting the past. Finally, it is accepted as the uncorrectable fate of the subaltern. To be sure, the zenith of negative perspective is revealed in the theory of Margins of Kim SiHyung. It shows that the misery of individual extends to that of the national scope. In other word, the infelicity of an individual and a nation coexist and is legalized in the theory of Margins. His theory seems to represent the position of whole Margins obtaining consent of people like Myung hoon, In Chul, Kyung Ae. Hwang Sook Hyun. In this case, however, it can not be denied that the theory is the critical factor distributing the pessimism of the subaltern.
Through this reflection, the Margins can be revealed as the product of discourse of ruling elite. Characters of the Marginsare always programmed and produced as the miserable subaltern by the colonial discourse. The logic of Kim that the fate of outside nations is depended on the intention of the hegemonic nation prophesizes the infelicity of the subaltern hypothecated its destiny by the ruling class. Even though each character casts the earnest question about the place of the subaltern by his own voice in the absurd world, they can not be reappeared without the voice of the ruling class. If they use the voice of the elite, it can be interpreted as the result of 'transferred colonial consciousness' trying to be separated themselves from the subaltern. It is the justification of present hierarchy for them to stand in the superiority of the subaltern denying the humility of themselves. Therefore, the concept of subaltern is hard to be established in the context of transferred colonialism. It is also vulnerable as the degradation into the pre modern way. There exists the limit of Margins. The subaltern is completely forbidden the passage of growing with own subjectivity as it is recognized as the class reappeared by the ruling class. R. G. Collingwood describes modern history as the nightmare. It can be also applied to the subaltern of the Margins. They can not demand the reason of the mysterious nightmare of catastrophe in the world. As Wood mentions, they are just the mere beings that have to stand it. The power of resistance was not given to the subaltern from the beginning to seek the utopian vision in the absurd society. In this respect, the Margins should be only an anecdote of the failed subaltern without any voice from the view of the elite.
