This paper addresses the question of lexically controlled surface realizations observed in derived environments in English phonology, and investigates the effect of input specification together with la-faith on selecting the optimal output. Such a lexicon-driven approach leads to a new perspective on the problem of patterned phonological opacity in OT. By taking a lexicon-driven approach where lexical specification is highly considered, I have shown that aspects of inputs play the decisive role in resolving arbitrary preferences among competing allomorphs, thus giving a more consistent account of the lexical variation than previously suggested. Contrary to the free input of ROTB lemma in classic OT, this paper presupposes a more restrained conception that specified lexical information with la-faith is needed to successfully deal with lexically controlled phonological variation observed in English phonology.
