Reviewing the studies on ellipsis, we could categorize them into four, each of which proved to have a variety of specific conditions of its own. For example, it was shown that the conditions related with the NP, such as topics, mutuality of knowledge, and presupposition have an influence on the ellipsis of 「は」. It was also known that a little contextual change makes it difficult to see whether the ellipsis occurs and that the ellipsis depends on what the expression, context and situation of utterance are.
This study examines the ellipsis of the ending 「は」 in current Japanese discourse, focusing on the conditions regarding the relationship between speakers and addressees, contextual situations, characteristics of utterance, and grammatical processes. Devising the rule 「ø」「noø」, we specified the conditions of ellipsis.
Terming 「ø」 as 「ø」「noø」, we decide that it has the function of predicting what will follow from the speaker. There are two categories of deletion. The first is optional. It is important that the sentence containing 「ø」「noø」 sound natural when the deleted 「は」 recovers itself in the sentence in question. The second is obligatory and is termed as Datsuraku(disappear). If the sentence in which 「は」 is inserted proves to be unnatural, the deletion of 「は」 should be treated as obligatory, say Datsuraku(disappear). The second category is not within the scope of this thesis.
