It has been assumed that the systematic variation of VOT values due to different stop places in articulation follows an automatic mechanism. This study aims to test that assumption and see what effect variations in an individual's experience in a foreign language have in this regard. Results, based on the percentage of VOT by stop places and their grand means, indicated that experienced learners produced more native-like values while inexperienced learners demonstrated increased transfer from native Korean values. Also some individual learners displayed varying patterns of VOT as a function of stop places, bilabials' VOTs' being indistinguishable from those of velars. The transfer of native language percentage by stop places and the amount of individual speaker variations may possibly indicate that the VOT variations include language-specific phonetic contents larger than previously assumed, and that the language-specific phonetic details need to be independently learned.
