This study examines the extent of the gradience effect in phonetic realization of the English stops in the prosodic hierarchy for two native speaker groups of English and Korean. Based on prosodic strengthening observed in acoustic parameters such as VOT, F0, and [H1-H2], this study aims to characterize the way in which these acoustic parameters interact with each other across the prosodic domains. Patterns of correlation among these parameters indicate that the American speakers rely crucially on VOT, and weakly on F0, for the voicing contrast, while the Korean speakers make reference to both VOT and F0 in a complementary mode. [H1-H2] turned out to be proportionate to VOT in both speaker groups, although the voicing contrast based on [H1-H2] is more sharply defined with the American speakers. Put together, the voicing contrast is achieved by a salient dual play of VOT and [H1-H2] for the American speakers; it is implemented by all three parameters in tandem for the Korean speakers.
