In this paper, different ways to account for obligatory control phenomena in English are examined: from structural analyses to thematic approaches, and to non-grammatical accounts. Obligatory control constructions will first be analyzed in the Autolexical framework as instances of structural mismatch between the syntactic component and the semantic component. The later part of this paper will focus on a phenomenon called controller shift. Control verbs such as ask, persuade, and promise not only hold responsibility relation but also can entail potential benefit relation, and a crucial factor that triggers controller shift is whether the infinitive complement presupposes the existence of a beneficiary. One may argue that a certain approach (structural, thematic, or pragmatic) has certain advantage over others providing better alternative analyses, but arguing that a certain approach can replace another and thereby reduce redundancy can overlook the fact that language is a multifaceted phenomenon.
