It was in the Silver Age that Russian icons. which had been buried in the dark and sooted olifa and innumerable repaintings of the past years, suddenly began to reveal their incomparable beauty to the world, and caused enthusiastic responses from the artists and intelligentsia of that time. The newly discovered Russian icons became an object of keen interest among Russian symbolist writers as well as painters. As Russian symbolist writers developed a unique worldview of religio-philosophical nature, this paper reviews how the Russian symbolist circle reinterpreted the heritage of Russian icons, and as an example of such a reinterpretation examines Andrey Bely's The Silver Dove. The significance of icon motif in The Silver Dove makes it possible for us to consider the novel as 'a verbal icon,' especially 'a Vita icon' dealing with a martyr's life. Yet The Silver Dove as an icon is not one made according to the iconographical canon of traditional Christianity. but' an icon redefined by pagan people.' This paper examines how the iconography, which was a ritual object of traditional Christianity, is appropriated by Russian pagan people and reinterpreted. In sum, this analysis shows Bell s view of Russian paganism as a healthy part of Russian religious heritage.
