This paper aims to demonstrate that the ordering of the asymmetrically conjoined elements in English is rule-governed and follows the iconicity of distance and temporal order. On empirical grounds, it claims that (ⅰ) the linguistic distance of conjuncts corresponds to their conceptual distance; (ⅱ) the order of the conjuncts sequenced in time is in accordance with that of temporal order.
As a point of departure, iconicity is defined and classified into two major types in Newmeyer's (1992, 1998) sense: 'structure-concept' iconicity and 'structure-discourse' iconicity, each of which can be best represented by the iconicity of distance and the iconicity of temporal order. From the viewpoint of the iconicity of distance, efforts are then made to analyze coordination in compound sentences and sentences containing compound verb phrases. It is said that the shorter the linguistic distance between conjoined elements, the closer their conceptual distance. An analogous analysis is made with respect to coordinates that consist of two time-related expressions conjoined by and. The conclusion is then drawn that coordinates of the kind are ordered in such a way that they match their sequential order in time and that the iconicity of temporal order is in operation.
