It is generally said that the minimal pair sentences that derive from dative, conative, and locative alternations in English have different meanings and functions. To this extent, this paper aims to uniformly account for such discourse-functional differences in terms of Haiman's (1980, 1983, and 1985) distance principle of Iconicity Theory. Based on the results of the survey of 30 native speakers' intuition on functional, semantic or pragmatic differences between the minimal pair sentences under discussion, it also examines the validity of the proposed cognitive-functional analysis of the argument-alternation constructions.
As a result, two claims have been made: (ⅰ) the closer the (beneficiary I goal, attempted-action, location) NP is to the verb, the stronger the latter's effects on the former become and vice versa; (ⅱ) a good number of the native speakers seem to be in line with the presented discourse-functional analysis and recognize the differences of the sort between the minimal pair sentences at issue.
