The calligraphy style of Zhao Mengfu(趙孟? or Zhao Songxue 松雪 1254-1322) became prevailing once it was introduced toward the end of Goryeo Dynasty in that it was proper to express the consciousness and the spiritual state of the new generation of scholarly aristocrats whose philosophy and principles were based on the rationalist Neo-Confucianism of Chu Hsi (Zhu Xi 朱熹).
Lee, Am (1297~1364), who served during the rein of Choongnyulwang and Gongminwang was a scholarly aristocrat of the era. He was famous for his military tactics and was also a prominent poet and a great master of Songxue Style Calligraphy (松雪體). He served as a government official and disciplined his descendants based on Confucius moral and integrity. After he retired he associated with Buddhist Monks and tried to be free from the worldly fame and wealth. He had a deep understanding of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and he is the author of 'the History of Dangun Chosun(檀君世紀), of the ancient Korea founded by Dangun.
The Songxue Calligraphy Style which Lee was good at was introduced to Goryeo at three different times. First by the young scholarly aristocrats of Royal Academy (萬卷堂) and the second, when 忠宣王 1275~1325 returned from Yuan[元]. Finally when 'The Princess of Yuan[元]' came to Goryeo to marry a Korean King, Gongminwang.
His Magnum Opus is an inscription on a stele-〈문수사장경비〉 or 〈文殊院藏經碑〉 at the Munsuwon Temple. The calligraphy of young Lee of only 31 years old could compete with that of Zhao Mengfu. The Zhuansh?[篆書 Seal script] is considered the best from Goryeo Dynasty. The epitaph is important in that it was the first one of Songxue Style. Two poems '奉賀詩' and '滿門桃李詩' found on block books also show Songxue Style although the engravings are not very elaborate. His Xingsh?(行書) and C?osh?(草書inscription of C?o or Grass inscription) are differentiated from the smooth and elegant style of original Songxue Calligraphy in that Lee's was wider.
The famous scrapbook of Lee's writings and pictures-〈송이원귀반곡서첩〉-show a little bit thick and beautiful strokes and other styles, characteristic of Lee's calligraphy. There he also used the calligraphy styles of Wang Xizhi(王羲之) and Ouyang Xun(歐陽詢). As a whole, the book shows the first stage of the new calligraphy style adopted at that time.
The strokes used for〈春雨詩〉 and 〈渡江詩〉 were a little bit thin and strong and reveal Songxue Calligraphy. The poems are presumed to have been written while he was residing in Yuan.
The reason why the Songxue Calligraphy was introduced to Goryeo was that the society needed some momentum. Those who wanted some drastic changes tried to express their aesthetic philosophy. But the society was not fully ready to accept the new trend. More moderate and temperate style of calligraphy was more treasured. Lee, Am is very important as one of the masters of calligraphy of the era who influenced a great deal on the establishment of the new Songxue Style so that it could be developed and bloomed during the next generation of Chosun Dynasty.
