This article explores the theology and ministry of John Wesley, the father of the Methodist movement, to discover his perspective on children, their potential for relationship with God and how to best nurture them. It begins by presenting evidence of the attention given to children by the early Methodists and then examines elements in Wesleyan theology that are viewed as “child friendly.” Wesley's understanding of the “Way of Salvation” is discussed focusing on how children may experience that saving journey. The theological concepts of sin and grace, the effectives of baptism and conversion are examined seeking to understand how Wesley believed children experienced these. The article then looks at Wesley's instructions for teaching and nurturing children in the home, the Methodist Societies, and in the schools he established. The goal of this exploration is “critical retrieval,” seeking to find in the Wesleyan theological tradition insights that enhance our understanding of how God is at work in the lives of children today and how the church and the home can partner with God in the spiritual nurture of the young.
