The purpose of this paper is to study how English demonstrative pronoun ‘this’ and ‘that’ are pragmatically translated into Korean in various situations. Referential expressions of these demonstrative pronouns have mainly been studied from the view of syntax. However, the seemingly direct translation of them into Korean had not rendered a satisfactory result because they are expressed somewhat different from each other. Referential expressions of the demonstrative pronoun in Korean are much more closely related with pragmatical factors than English. To study their differences between English and Korean, first, the concept and system of reference in each language will be introduced. Next, four types of referential expressions during translating into Korean will be presented with some examples. The first type is English ‘this’ translated into Korean ‘이것’, 'that' into ‘저것’ as we learned from traditional grammar. The second type is ‘this’ or ‘that’ which repeats itself for its original precedents. The third type is that they are omitted, not translated. The fourth type is that ‘this’ is crossly translated into ‘저것’ or ‘그것’, ‘that’ crossly into ‘이것’. After that, the followings will be suggested. First, some expressions in English are better to omit in Korean, if they sound natural or omitting pronouns is generic in Korean. Second, it is more general to repeat the precedented as the same referent rather than referential expressions in Korean. Third, they will be translated into Korean freely depending on discourse context.
