Standing in contrast to animating urban scenes and details elaborated earlier in Sketches by Boz and Pickwick Papers, Dickens’ Oliver Twist takes on a subdued tone in dealing with the city, informed as it is by, in Steven Marcus’ words, ‘the dramatisation or symbolisation of abstract ideas’. It is in this context of stylistic shift that this essay will examine Oliver Twist, especially in its figuration of bodily experience. In contrast to the earlier works, Oliver Twist became noticeably restrained in dealing with elements of urban experience, as it set them against what can be described as the struggling patterns of individuated consciousness in defining realms of selfhood and verity. This conflicting sense of figuration spells out one of the most intriguing dramatic possibilities in Dickens, one that is informed by the irreducible sense of disparity between the human body and mind lodged in images of selfhood. The essay will explore this dramatic possibility mainly in the characterization of Oliver Twist, especially in the way in which the narrative need for keeping intact the boy’s innocent image becomes beleaguered by complicating circumstances including his own bodily desire. Particular attention is thus placed on a series of ‘psychical’ features assigned to the boy to see whether they can tease out an implicit narrative or figurative move undermining his innocent image.
