In the figure of Fanny Price, the heroine of Mansfield Park, Austen explores what becomes of a world that is re-ordered through the self-effacing but sterling point of view of the weakest female character. Fanny is characterized by deprivation within a world of wealth and tradition rapidly being overturned by modern and cosmopolitan values. This paper investigates the process of authorization of Fanny. It attempts to show how the heroine sees her world, and more importantly, how silent observation is registered through the technique called “free indirect discourse.” The subjective depth Fanny’s gaze discloses and the author’s configuration of it as a form of alternative authority signal new possibilities for female authority in the novel and in the world of Mansfield Park. Following Michael McKeon’s recent work on rethinking the nature of public and private in modern culture, we read Mansfield Park as charting the devolution of public authority of Sir Bertram to the domestic authority of Fanny Price. In the process, we examine what it means to be in and out of Mansfield Park.
