Taking cues from both Fredrich Engels’ insight of how French and German novels can best represent two different styles of marriage: the Catholic style and the Protestant style and Georg Simmel’s argument of how “most human relationships can be interpreted as forms of exchange”, this paper is an attempt to interpret the relationships in Mansfield Park as forms of exchange. I argue that the apparently penniless Fanny does not marry into her aristocratic relative’s family empty-handed. Rather, in exchange for the economic support, she offers the morally crumbling estate at Mansfield Park much-needed moral fiber, represented by her sense of family and church. But Austen’s novel is not simply a moral fable or even a continental novel. By synthesizing the French plot of cuckoldry of Rushworth-Maria marriage and the German plot of Edmund “getting” Fanny, Austen transcends both the moral example of the latter and negative discipline of the former. Mansfield Park is neither French nor German, neither Catholic nor fully Protestant, but a peculiarly Anglican novel. The quiet and unassuming Fanny is a harbinger of the heroine whose strong sensibility for family and church lays the basis of nineteenth century domestic fiction.
