This article examines how the Britain' imperial century (1815-1902) rises, prospers, and falls as a “metaphor” in the three literary texts of Victorian England. I survey not only the responses of the gentry of the British colony, but also the influence of the British imperialism on colonies such as the Antigua sugar plantation, the West Indies, and Jamaica.In the beginning of Britain’s imperial century, England tries to hide her colonies, even though the financial and social wealth of England comes from them. Jane Austen suggests the anxiety of colonizer through the confusion caused by the absence of Sir Bertram from England in Mansfield Park. In its middle period, the imperialism is transformed from the “dominant” stage of imperialism into a “hegemonic” stage. Charlotte Bronte presents Jane as an ideal woman against the anxiety of the counter invasion of the other by tracing the close relation between the British empire and her major characters in Jane Eyre. In its end, George Eliot describes the total corruption of English high society and of the British imperialism as a ‘metaphor’ in Daniel Deronda. This study presents us a brief mapping of the British imperialism.
