The purpose of this paper is to find a fresh way to reflect on the frailities of current democratic vision within progressive force at a historic moment of intellectual weakness and devastating political defeat in critical election. I take issue with the concept of politics that informs a great deal of thinking within liberal groups today. This concept can be characterized as delegative trusteeship, rationalist and neo-liberalism. This paper demonstrates that delegative trusteeship cannot be responsive to constituents, and rationalistic as well as neo-liberal politics cannot perceive the constitutive role of antagonism in social life. These foibles in current thinking in liberal groups, instead of consolidating democracy after democratization, has paradoxically created a political space assertively filled by authoritarian populist, and more traditional versions of the right wing. By retrieving republican tradition that has been rich soil for flowering liberal and democratic theories, this paper seeks to revitalize the soul of democratic vision. In particular, we have much to gain by attending to several insights in republican tradition; to the concept of republican representation; to the way it sought to control elites with ferocious populism; and to its keen opposition to arbitrary domination.
