This paper attempts to read the dark pictures of the capitalism of our own time back into The Merchant of Venice. The play tries to establish a congruence between economic and ethical conduct in the emergent capital society which is premised on the priority of money over human value. But the central design to provide a congruence between those two finally turns out to be incomplete or contradictory. It is because the play provides very ideological resolution to the dilemmas raised in the course of action.
In this play, all the characters' business is thriving and various modes of acquiring and holding property are displayed. All the characters try to win: man’s nature is one of tricks and self-interest. The ‘flesh bond’ between Shylock and Antonio has become a typical incident which challenges the ruling norm of this mercenary society. But Shylock’s demand of law is crushed by Portia’s casuistry and ironically, confiscating his whole property by the name of mercy, the Venetian society of commerce is purged of its mercenary demon. Shylock's conviction that Christianity and revenge are synonyms is confirmed while Christians come into a windfall and relieved of financial cares. With this happy end Christians confirm the correspondence between human agency and divine plan, and reaffirm that ethical value will win against economic reasonings in the end. But the ‘Shylock trial’, on the other hand, strongly suggests that these beliefs are no more than winners' ideology.
Such words as ‘bond’, ‘hazard’, and ‘venture’ are among the most frequently used words in the play. In the sense that these words has become the key words of the capitalism of our own time, The Merchant of Venice, with the very significant title, foreshadows oncoming darkness of the capitalism.
