Although biological activities of Korean mistletoe extract have been well documented, those of its fermented version were less studied. Fermented Korean mistletoe extract was prepared by incubating a water extract of this plant with different kinds of lactobacillus bacteria: Lactobacillus acidophilus KCTC 3179, Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC 3103, Lactobacillus casei KCTC 2180 or Lactobacillus kefiri KCTC 361. Each of the fermented extracts was then compared with the non-fermented KM-110 in their antitumor activities and anti-angiogenic behaviors. LaKM-3, a fermented extract with Lactobacillus acidophilus, showed strongest inhibition of tumor growth and lung metastasis in mouse. In addition, the LaKM-3 demonstrated significant suppression on the migration, the invasion, and the formation of tube-like structures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), suggesting LaKM-3 strong anti-angiogenic activity. These data suggest the fermented Korean mistletoe extract may be developed as an anti-tumor therapeutic approach.
