This study was carried out to investigate the growth and flowering responses of Dendranthema pacificum (Nakai) Kitamura by the beginning time of short day (SD) treatment. The plants at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 weeks (SD1, SD2, SD3, SD4, SD5, SD6) after planting, respectively, were moved and grown under 8 h daylight condition. In the later SD treatments (SD4, SD5, and SD6), the values of plant width, volume, and leaf area decreased, showing a more compact form appropriate for small pot plant production. However, some flowers of SD5 and SD6 degenerated before full blossom. Thus, it was recommended that rooted cuttings of D. pacificum should be moved to SD condition within four weeks. The visible bud formation (VBF) was examined to estimate a suitable time for moving rooted cuttings into SD. The T?? values (the number of days from SD treatment to when visible buds were shown at 50%) indicated that the VBF was promoted as rooted cuttings were moved into SD later. However, the total days from planting to T?? were not significant in all SD treatments. In SD3 and SD4, the flowers developed more rapidly than the other treatments in all stages. In this experiment, SD4 was the most suitable treatment considering the flower development and the plant form for a small pot plant production.
