This study examined the potential adverse effects of 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) on hematology and serum biochemistry in Fischer 344 rats after 3 days repeated whole-body inhalation exposure at 0, 5, 20, and 80 ppm. There were no exposure-related clinical signs and mortality in any of the animals treated with 1,3-DCP during the study period. At 80 ppm, however, an increase in the serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total cholesterol, and total bilirubin and a decrease in serum glucose, total protein, and albumin were observed in rats. At 20 ppm, an increase in the total cholesterol was observed. There were no exposure-related effects on hematology and serum biochemistry at 5 ppm. It was concluded that, even in the case of asymptomatic 1,3-DCP toxicosis, some adverse effects on hepatic function were likely to develop.
