Kim, So-Wol is very famous poet in Korea by his lyric poems where has hardly been remarked deep relationship with painful reality in the poet's time. In the history of korean literature. only lyric beauties have. in the poems, been focused on and had the poet really been ignorant of dark period caused by japanese forces?
In 1923, the poet composed "San You Wha". the poem whose message has been contended that it shows only the beauty of the flower blooming in a mountain. However. when is counted japanese cherry blossom sightseeing, japanese national promenade where Japan's authority has wanted to engrave. in japanese people's mind. loyalty toward the nation. "San You Wha", symbols of korean intellectual's agony and of resistance spirit are opposed to cherry blossoms, symbols of japanese militarism and of its idelogy. This opposition emphasizes value of the poet as a nationalist poet.
In 1923. mighty earthquake took place in Kan -Tho. where Japanese and its collaborators slaughtered korean people having lived in the region. The manslaughter is the motif of the poem, "Cho Hon", literal meaning is sommons of ghosts. The message of the poem is. in fact. national wailing on the japanese massacre of innocent korean people.
In the year of 1882. Japan drew the Chaemulpo Treaty with the Empire of Tai-Han and the poet considered it as a part of process loosing the nation's sovereignty. The treaty led the poet to compose the poem "Night, at Chasmulpo". a night for the nation's sovereignty.
Kim So-Wol is nationalist poet in his poems' messages, lyric poet in his poems' melodies.
