The purpose of this research is to explore the form and function of declarative questions in Korean through an analysis of multi-party conversations from the perspective of talk- in- interaction. The examination of the data shows that declarative questions are typically signalled by terminal rising intonation and that they are the most frequently used type of questions in doing questioning among various types of questions in Korean conversation. After showing the distribution of grammatical forms of declarative questions in terms of TCUs, I examine the functions of clausal and non- clausal declarative questions, considering the contexts where they are used. The examination shows that declarative questions are used to perform the following functions: (ⅰ) asking for the confirmation of factual information from the addressee, (ⅱ) confirmation of unassimilated information from the speaker by repeating the information provided by the speaker, (ⅲ) next- turn repair initiators (NTRIs) for problems in hearing and understanding, and (ⅳ) expressing emotional attitudes such as incredulity, surprise, disagreement, among others. Finally, this paper shows that there exists a close relationship between form and function in the choice of various types of TCUs and their functions in talk-in-interaction.
