This study explores the pragmatic properties and discourse functions of the English demonstratives this, that and the pronoun it through an examination of the discourse deixis deployed in the novel Passing Strange. The main purpose of this study is to identify the pragmatic factors that govern the choice of this, that and it and some constraints on their occurrences in discourse. The analysis focuses on the differences of discourse, attitudinal, and emotional functions of the three deictic expressions in a variety of contexts. Following a discussion of the metaphorical extension of their deictic uses, the relationship between their discourse functions and the organization of context is examined. It is, then, suggested that their pragmatic differences are associated with specific environments or pragmatic factors that characterize their occurrence, such as the speaker's/writer's beliefs and intentions on the use of deictic expressions, the relationship between the choice of a particular deictic expression and the organization of a discourse structure, the speaker's/writer's assumption about the hearer/reader, and the speaker's/writer's attitude and emotion toward the referent.
