With respect to urban renewal in Korea, emphasis has been given to the physical factors of obscene and to the economic predicates. Much less attention has been given to socio-economic factors such as tenure shift, neighborhood change, and social capital. In terms of urban regeneration, Britain has provided a variety of policy experiences and there has been a sea change in the last 10 years. Increasingly, urban renewal has become a centerpiece of community and economic regeneration in the UK. Despite many decades of urban policy and renewal initiatives, the need for social inclusion and urban regeneration in cities and towns remains pressing in the UK. The unique blend of the private, public and not-for-profit sectors places at the heart of the new agenda for community renewal. The purpose of this paper is to distil the major lessons from the past and present experience of urban renewal in Britain. In considering the future of community renewal in Korea, it is essential both to take account of the likely evolution of the ‘urban problems’ and to anticipate the possible future development of policy instruments and structures. Policy makers have to deal with complex and interrelated problems including the conditions for the establishment of viable communities.
