This study was intended to identify the purpose and process of holding the World Korean Athletic Meeting, the predecessor of the World Korean Festival, its performance and the like and to investigate its historical significance.
The World Korean Athletic Meeting was incarnated when the participation of about 30 countries including China and USSR in the Seoul Olympic Games was almost ascertained following the successful hosting of the 86 Seoul Asian Games. And its promotional plan was set under the initiative of government and realized by the prior exchange among the Ministry of Sports, those who concerned of the Korea Sport Council, and Koreans abroad, and diplomatic efforts and so forth.
Through these efforts, 1326 compatriots from about 50 countries in the world including China and USSR with which Korean government did not have diplomatic relations(including 537 officers and 100 persons belonging to the artistic company) were present at the World Korean Athletic Meeting, and of them there the famous figures of the USSR such as Nelly Kim and others.
Sports games were played by dividing them into 7 Olympic sports events such as field and track, swimming, volleyball, tennis, badminton, table tennis, boxing and six folk sports games such as Korean wrestling, swinging, archery, seesawing, the tug of war, and kite flying. Baduk and janggi(oriental chess called in Korean language) were played as the extra games.
In addition to sports games, a diversity of national events were hosted as part of the World Korean Festival, such as performance by Koreans resident in US, Japan and USSR, home visit, the demonstration of the traditional Korean food and beverage fete and wedding ceremony, tourism and industrial inspection, the campaign for reunion of dispersed world Koreans, Korean running-together campaign, the king procession, participation in the flower car parade, participation in the event of striking the bell of Bosingak.
The World Korean Athletic Meeting could attain the goals of 'confirming the identity of the Korean, strengthening the tie between Koreans, inspiring the Korean pride through the picture of the developed fatherland. In addition, it achieved the outcome of 'providing the area for meeting the kins, expanding the exchange with Korean abroad and so forth. But the process of selecting the participating Koreans abroad, the operation of organizational tourism and games, the selection of some sports events and many others were made to remain as problems to be solved in the future.
