Koreans, no matter living in Korea or abroad, must all contribute to the unification of North and South Korea. As Korean population abroad increases, their powers and influences politics and economy increases.
Among many procedures to achieve unification, North and South Korea exchange via sports is least effected by political conflicts. Furthermore, with the collective efforts and contributions of the Koreans abroad, the end results could exceed the expectations.
Koreans living abroad can act as civilian diplomats. In other words, they could rectify misunderstandings and negative perspective of foreigners and help them become aware of the importance of the Korean unification.
Koreans living abroad are able to face either North or South Koreans in a neutral position, alleviate possible hostility and enmity between North and South Koreans, and emphasize the necessity for North and South Korea sports exchange without political barriers and limitations.
Furthermore, sports organizations or individuals in the field can take advantage of easier travel to North Korea from a foreign country and have frequent contacts to establish sports exchange.
In addition, they can initiate and organize a type of North and South Korea sports event to facilitate sports exchange between North and South Koreans living abroad.
On a similar note, in case of conflict or disagreement that might damage the relationship between North and South Korea, Koreans living abroad can be actively involved to help it recover.
Finally, a third country besides North and South Korea could provide sports seminars and conventions and invite the experts of North and South Korea. Also, a third country could organize an invitational competition or demonstrative game of some sort to facilitate social exchange between both country’s teams and fans.
In conclusion, in regards to the process of the improvement of North and South Korea’s relationship and ultimately the unification of North and South Korea, the collective effort of Koreans and 700 million Koreans living abroad is essential.
