The aim of this paper attempts to investigate whether a celebrity impacts on tourist’s destination image formation process and whether a consequent complex image formed through this process influences tourist’s behavioural intentions during trip in the context of tourism marketing. To examine this, the paper extends the image formation process theory by adopting travel behaviour: revisit intention and recommendation. After tourists’ travel motivations have been conceptualized through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), the relationships between motivations, destination images and travel behaviour have been explored through path analysis. The proposed hypotheses were tested against two factors developed by travel motivation: Beatles-based and Non-Beatles-based motivations. It was found that a celebrity positively influenced tourist’s image formation process to some extent. The Beatles-based motivation tourists developed their complex images mainly based on organic image agents (non-tourism specific information sources), while the non-Beatles-based motivation ones formed complex images from both organic and induced image agents (tourism promotional information sources). With reference to the travel behaviour, both the Beatles-based and non-Beatles-based motivation tourists tended to have a strong intention to recommend the destination to potential visitors through their complex image formed from the satisfaction after an actual visit, whilst its influence on intention to revisit was not satisfactorily proved.
