This paper studies how much the evaluation of Spartacus and the Slave War was different among the Roman and Greek sources, the historical novel Spartacus and the movie Spartacus in modern times, then how can we make a hero from the sources and what the problems are. Spartacus who had been a gladiator of the city of Capua in Italy escaped the camp with about 70 of the enslaved men in 73 B.C. and became was a leader in the third slavery war for two years. The war ended by legionary armies under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus. At the final battle Spartacus rushed at Crassus but did not reached him and was killed. The rest of his army was confusion and was slaughtered in huge numbers. The body of Spartacus was not found. Crassus had six thousand of them who were prisoner crucified along the Appian way between Capua and Rome. But little is known about Spartacus before the war and the historical accounts of the war are often contradictory. To the Romans he was only a leader of rebelled slaves.
But Spartacus has been a great inspiration to revolutionaries in modern times. Especially he was a hero in a historical novel Spartacus by Howard Fast, in 1951. In the novel Spartacus was a symbol of the heroism of slaves and became a champion of freedom against tyranny of any kind. The character of Spartacus as a champion of freedom was rather intensified in a 1960 film Spartacus, based on the novel Spartacus and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Spartacus has been elevated into conscious revolutionary leader of oppressed slaves and free proletariat. Thus the views on the Spartacus conflicted extremely each other between the ancient and modern writing. In general the ancient accounts are emotionally against the revolted slaves and are pro-Roman. But popular image of Spartacus in the modern times is far from reality.
The problem is that nowadays students seem to prefer reading the historical novels or watching historical dramas, movies to reading historical sources or the articles about that topics. So I argue that at first teachers or professors who teach history class need to correct the false images which did not depended on the sources and were fabricated especially by political ideology consciously. For people or students they tend to consider the false images which are presented by the historical novels or movies such as Novel Spartacus or Movie Spartacus as historical facts and reality.
