This article examines Taiwanese collaborators with Japanese colonial authorities at the turn of the 20th century in Taiwan. Author focuses on the Taiwanese reactions to the colonization by Japan, reactions of submission and collaboration rather than resistance.
According to the analysis, the colonial authorities contrived to win, in particular, Taiwanese elites for the purpose of solidifying their footing on Taiwan. Various methods were mobilized to draw the elites into the colonial system: conferring the order of gentleman(Shenzhang), giving banquet to the elderly(Xianglaodian), enhancement society of literature(Yangwenhui), etc. Many groups of 'local bandits' resisting Japanese invader were induced to accept Japanese rule. Colonial authorities recognized Taiwanese elites' social status and protected their properties in return for their submission.
The examples of Li Chunsheng and Chen Qiuju showed different reactions to the Japanese rule. Li accepted all along the Japanese rule. As a merchant magnate, he preferred the stability of social order to the state of confusion generating from the resist ance struggle. He considered Japan modernized nation and a model for Taiwan. Chen was at the beginning a resister against the Japanese occupation, but he was before long accepted Japanese inducement policy. Chen also became active collaborator with colonial regime.
Relationship between these elites and colonial authorities, however, was not simple one-sideling. Taiwanese elites, such as Li and Chen, collaborated with Japan on condition that their life and properties should be maintained and protected. The reason Chen changed his position was that he would be continuously respected in his local society and still economically beneficiary under the Japanese rule. Author gives this connection the name of bilateral relationship of mutual benefits.
