This paper examines two questions. One is related to the Franco?Japanese collaboration in Indochina during WWII. From the moment of occupying the northern part of Indochina in September 1940 the Japanese imperialists determined to collaborate with the French colonial power. This collaboration lasted three and half years until the Japanese army broke down the French colonial machines in March 1945. During the collaboration period Japan had the prior claims to military and economy in Indochina while France managed to hold so?called colonial sovereignty including politics and administration. This paper explains the background, reason and benefit of each side of this collaboration. Moreover it investigates how the cooperation between the old colonial empire and the new occupying power had an effect on the political?economical life of Vietnamese, particularly on the pro?Japanese groups.
From the outbreak of Sino?Japanese War in 1937, some Vietnamese has an illusion that Japan could help Vietnam to liberate from one of the western imperialists, France. They gathered together under the leadership of prince Cuong De and the flag of Viet Nam Phuc Quoc Dong Minh Hoi in 1938. This paper shed light on who were the pro?Japanese Vietnamese and how they were mobilized into this camp. However the pro?Japanese collaborators failed to get the sufficient support from Japan because the latter maintained the collaborative attitude toward the French colonial authorities. Ironically for this, the pro?Japanese Vietnamese escaped from the worst criticism, that is the treachery. No one denies that the main motive of the pro?Japanese Vietnamese was anti?French colonialism at least during the stage of France?Japan Collaboration in Indochina.
